Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To develop a technique for assessing the rate and distribution of erosion damage in components of varying geometry using a multi colour layer coating method. 2. To visualise and determine trajectories of sand particles as they flow through a geometrical feature. 3. To generate experimental erosion data suitable for the development of a component based erosion risk assessment model. (1) A method will be developed to internally coat components with multiple layers of a coloured polymer or paint. (2) Model components will be manufactured from a machinable transparent polymeric material (probably perspex) to facilitate the visualisation experiments. (3) A rig will be commissioned. (4) Tests will be carried out over a range of gas velocities with most effort concentrating on 10 40 m/s. (5) Data analysis will involve: (a) Measurement of colour coat thickness. (b) Colour photography. (c) Characterisation of the erosion behaviour of the coatings. (d) Visualisation experiments to estimate the trajectories and dynamic behaviour of sand particles at various locations. (e) Data analysis to provide the experimental basis for the development of an erosion risk assessment model for each component.
