Summary on Grant Application Form
At Cardiff we have built meta-translation systems which have facilitated different aspects of interoperability in heterogeneous distributed databases (HDD). This programme will identify by studying the internal representations used by these systems a comprehensive and extendible integrated internal representation. This will be tested by building a prototype ITSE (Integrated Translation Support Environment), based on this representation and testing how well it supports all aspects of interoperability for a relational user in an HDD. If the results from this investigation are encouraging and time permits we will look at whether the ITSE can be used in supporting interoperability between different information systems, including non-database systems, in a heterogeneous distributed environment. It is intended to investigate how this ITSE can be used to address HDD interoperability problems in a commercial organisation, and its role in the development of interoperable system s by IT technical support staff. The prototype ITSE will be built on a Sun platform using PROLOG and X-Windows.
