Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal concerns a new approach for separating alkanes from alkenes. Two principal methods will be evaluated: firstly, the use of polar and sizeselective materials, in order to preferentially adsorb the alkene: and secondly, separations based on non-polarity and size for alkane adsorption. Following detailed characterisation of the materials, they will initially be used in the form of packed columns and the adsorption/desorption isotherms investigated using ethane/ethene and propane/propene feeds. Following this preliminary stage the most promising materials will be further developed in order to optimise their properties for a pressure swing adsorption process in consultation with Professor Barry Crittenden at Bath University.
