Far infrared and Raman spectroscopy will be used to investigate magnetic excitations in structures produced by the latest magnetic thin film, superlattice, and nanostructure technology. A novel high resolution far infrared Fourier transform spectrometer with a 7 T magnet has been purpose- built for this project, and theoretical support will be provided by an international team of experts in this field.Our current work on FeF2 will be extended to include antiferromagnetic films and superlattices. Surface polariton modes and non-reciprocal behaviour in rare-earth orthoferrites will be studied using a combination of ATR and high magnetic fields, and anisotropic propagation in ferrimagnetic nanostructures will be investigated. Detailed calculations on rare-earth metals indicate that magnetic resonance may be observable in the FIR reflection spectrum of thick epilayers. Reflection measurements are in progress and ATR is to be developed. Finally, other new materials will be studied as time permits, the most interesting being high Tc related compounds and organic solids.
