This research project is a cooperative venture between the University of Bath and Reyrolle Protection which is one of the World's leading manufacturers of protection and control equipment. The main objective of the project is to research into a new stand-alone protection relaying technique, fundamentally different from traditional relaying, that will meet the complex protection requirements of present and future transmission systems. The fundamental basis of the work will be research into new Artificial Intelligence-based technique capable of taking in more information and processing it in a totally different way from conventional protection such that it will be able to deal satisfactorily with all conceivable fault conditions (including contingencies). The ultimate aim is to research a technique whereby the protection will continuously adapt itself under prevailing system and fault conditions when in situ. Finally, prototype relay hardware will be developed and its performance evaluated under service conditions.
