New approaches now being used in whole body NMR imaging and spectroscopy make demands on the performance of the field gradient system which are far in excess of those experienced previously. The programme is directed towards satisfying these requirements by developing new methods of instrumentation and control. In the system presently in use the gradient coil currents are controlled to demand values and it is assumed that the gradient fields are in proportion to the currents. This may not be so for a number of reasons which include geometrical changes and eddy current formulation. It is proposed to produce a radical improvement to the systems by measuring the flux directly and using it as a feedback parameter. Array of superconducting NMR probes and cryogenically cooled search coils for gradient field level monitoring will be devised and the signals used together with direct current measurements in a DSP based control system. The performance of the new system will be demonstrated in clinical operation.
