The primary aim of the project is to devlop numerical procedures for simulating forming processes involving multi-phase materials, which arise in several industrial applications. The first phase of the work will involve modelling the deformation of multi-phase materials under large strain conditions, before integrating with existing contact/friction algorithms to permit the simulation of practical processes. A two field formulation will be employed and considerable attention will be given to both the appropriate element formulation, necessary to model near incompressible behaviour, and the stability and accuracy of the algorithms employed to integrate the problem of evolution. The computational model developed will be employed to simulate anindustrial juice extraction process by rolling. Firstly, a simulation will be undertaken of the test cell used to experimentally evaluate the material parameters. This will be necessary to determine the properties of the solid phase, since the test cell measurements relate to the overall composite action. An inverse identification method will be devleloped for extraction of material parameters. Finally, a series of simulations will be undertaken on the industrial rolling process in which the operational parameters are varied and the results obtained compared with industrial data for the same conditions.
