Summary on Grant Application Form
The principle aim of this project is to prepare and characterise a new class of polymers where the subunits are not linked solely be covalent bonds, but where the individual polymer chains also contain numbers of mechanical links. This can be achieved for the first time because of the serendipitous discovery in the applicants laboratory of a generally applicable methodology for preparing suitably functionalised molecular interlocked rings, catananes, in gram quantities. The higher goal of the project is to determine the effects on the physical properties of the polymer caused by introducing mechanical links into the material. This will be achieved by preparing classical polymers doped with various concentrations (from an average of less than one to perhaps >100 links per chain) of mechanical links along each polymer chain. It is thought that this structural modification could produce hybrid materials possessing some of the useful properties associated with low molecular weight (e.g. solubility) with those of high molecular weight (e.g. strength).
