Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme will investigate the use of modern time-frequency techniques, including the Wigner Distribution and the Choi-Williams Distribution, and cumulant based bispectral analysis methods, for the analysis of gas turbine engine vibration signals to detect gas turbine engine faults. These techniques will allow a much wider range of faults to be detected and isolated compared to the use of traditionally used techniques such as the Short time Fourier Transform. Interpretation of the results from these modern techniques is not straightforward, so part of the programme will be the identification of new characteristic fault features in the time-frequency domain. This will be done by the analysis of recently acquired engine vibration data with known faults present. The developed techniques will be implemented as a real time vibration monitor on a PC based parallel DSP system, so that the vibration monitor can be integrated as the front end of an expert system based engine diagnostic system (developed during a previous project).
