Summary on Grant Application Form
Time domain simulation of hydraulic systems is a vital tool in their design and in the optimisation of their performance. Several techniques are currently available for modelling rigid pipeline, but problems can occur in a number of situations. Furthermore, existing techniques for modelling flexible hoses are quite inadequate. A finite element technique for modelling the characteristics of hydraulic pipelines and flexible hoses is to be developed. This has the advantage over other methods of being able to model pipelines where properties and conditions are varying. Preliminary work has been done on modelling of rigid pipelines. This has shown that the accuracy of such models can be improved considerably by optimisation of the element lengths. The main objective is to extend the technique to model flexible hoses. These have considerably more complex characteristics than rigid pipes. No techniques are currently available for modelling the full dynamic behaviour of hydraulic hoses.
