Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will consist of the following tasks: 1. Design and construct new quiet tunnel and experimental splitter plate rig for use in work. 2. Perform basic study of turbulence-trailing edge interaction, including full measurement of noise radiated and characterisation of turbulence at trailing edge. 3. Analyse relation of turbulence to noise radiated in the light of Ffowcs-Williams/Hall theories. 4. Examine effects of finite trailing edge thickness on noise radiation, including wake instability effects, and search for trailing edge shapes which minimise noise radiated without introducing extraneous discrete frequencies. 5. Produce full reports/papers on each stage of work. Papers will be submitted for publication in suitable journals, e.g. Journal of Fluid of Mechanics, Journal of Sound and Vibration.
