Summary on Grant Application Form
New families of Kondo lattice compounds, of the types RTX and RTX2, will be studied where R is a rare earth (Ce or Yb), T is a transition or noble metal and X is a metalloid. Our previous work has shown a wealth of fascinating magnetic phenomena. The emphasis in this new programme will be studies of single crystals, to understand anisotropic properties and to elucidate the nature of the magnetic excitations in the ordered state. Quasielastic neutron spectroscopy will be used to probe the spin dynamics in the paramagnetic regime. Thermopower and resistivity measurements will be related to recent theories valid in the incoherent Kondo limit. New materials will be synthesised and characterised. The programme will include collaborations with other groups in the areas of low temperature heat capacity, MuSR, NMR and photoelectron spectroscopy.
