Supported by GR/H32742 we have demonstrated that it is possible to use 59Co NMR to measure quantitatively the fraction of the Co atoms in the interior and interface layers of Co/cu superlattices ie the degree of interfacial mixing. It was confirmed that interfacial roughness is not necessary to produce Giant Magneto-Resistance (GMR) as had been claimed previously. The direction of the magnetisation of Co atoms in the interior and interface regions has been monitored by performing swept frequency NMR in fields up to 1T. We now wish to use the experience gained over the last 2 years to investigate the crystal structure and magnetic properties of superlattices from Leeds and Bochum, rare earth multilayers from Oxford (in collaboration with Manchester) and fine particles of Co dispersed in Ag (Oxford) and in fullerenes.A preliminary measurement on a thin (<4nm) film of bcc Co (Cambridge) showed a weak signal at a frequency above that of fcc Co but the sample oxidized before the experiment was complete. If we can confirm this result it would end a long disagreement between theory and experiment and the transition from bcc to hcp could then be monitored as the thickness was increased. (All previous NMR measurements of bcc Co, on films >10nm, have given a lower frequency than for fcc Co because of a high density of defects in the bcc Co lattice).
