Summary on Grant Application Form
The project has two related parts: (1) the development of an x-ray fibre diffraction camera with the following characteristics: (a) a high degree of versatility and flexibility in the control and monitoring of the specimen environment; (b) the capacity to record time-resolved diffraction data with d spacings from 1A to 1000A with a variety of detectors and time-resolutions as high as 40 msecs; (c) the capability to record simultaneous WAXS/SAXS data; (2) the use of the system developed under (1) to investigate pre-crystallisation phenomena associated with changes in chain conformation and overall organisation in polyethlene. We anticipate that the facilities to be developed under this project will rapidly be recognised as a unique world-class facility which will not only be generally available to a wide variety of users studying fundamental aspects of synthetic and biological polymers but will also be seen by industrial users of the SRS as providing the opportunity to investigate polymer behaviour under manufacturing and processing conditions.
