Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will examine the extent to which time-resolved luminescence measurements can be used to study molecular behaviour and interactions in polymer blends. The programme of work will contain the following elements:(i)Time-resolved energy transfer will be used, for the first time, in examination of molecular interpenetration in polymer blends. (Recent preliminary experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of such an approach - see Appendix to the Case for Support).(ii)Time-resolved anisotropy measurements will be used to study macromolecular dynamics in homogeneous, partially miscible and phase-separated blends. This approach, never previously applied to polymer blends, has been shown , in the applicant's laboratory, to yield information regarding polymer motions in both fluid and solid states. In particular, time-resolved phosphorescence measurements (recently performed for the first time in a synthetic polymer system, in the laboratory of the applicant) will be used to study macromolecular behaviour over the range of blend-types described in (i). (iii) Luminescence measurements will be used to study the aggregation (as predicted by theory) and mobilities of chain termini in the interphase regions of phase-separated polymers.
