The motivation of the proposed work is to develop the synthesis of ternary and quaternary oxides containing cations with electronic structures that make them potential analogues of Cu2+. The solid state chemistry of the selected oxidation states of nickel has not been studied in detail so far. Low spin Ni(III) is and S=1/2 cation and is subject to the Jahn-Teller distortion if the e.g. electrons are localised. However, the majority of Ni(III) oxides are itinerant electron materials with quarter-filled energy bands. The aim is to synthesise localised, antiferromagnetic Ni(III) systems in which the Fermi level lies in a half-filled band split by correlation, by lifting the e.g. orbital degeneracy through control of the crystal field around Ni(III). New, and existing, Ni(III) insulators will be doped by oxidation, using our high pressure oxygen systems, or reduction. Ni (I) is isoelectronic with Cu(II), but its oxide chemistry is very underdeveloped. We aim to open up this area by extending the range of synthetic routes to this oxidation state. Low temperature oxidation will be explored, to introduce hole carriers. The electronic and magnetic properties of the new oxides will provide an important comparison with the Cu (II) systems.
