Summary on Grant Application Form
Laser ablation deposition (LAD) using excimer and CO2 pulsed lasers will be employed to prepare a range of magnetoelastic (active and passive), magnetoresistive and permanent magnet single layer thin films. In situ laser material processing (LMP) such as thermal and magnetic annealing will be used to induce surface or bulk modification so as to optimise their magnetic, magnetoelastic or magnetoresistive properties. High resolution laser lithography will be investigated for patterning the films. The microstructure and composition of the films will be examined by XRD, SEM and TEM which will also be used for domain studies. Magnetic, magnetoelastic and magnetoresistive properties of the films will be measured over a range of temperatures (4
