To examine the properties of various ferrite materials with specific reference to their use as Faraday rotators, and other forms of non-reciprocal device when used in free-space at mm-wave and sub-mm frequencies. The results should then provide a basis for making improved devices for use in a wide range of instruments and systems.Progress:Progress thus far has been excellent. Work has begun on both conventional pressed ferrite materials and sheets of ferrite-loaded ferrite. The W-band properties of samples have been measured and we have discovered some useful (and unexpected) properties. Some ferrites exhibit a combination of Faraday rotation and birefringence. We have already produced state-of-the-art mm-wave isolators. We have manufactured some improved prototype free-space isolators and we expect the newer materials which will be made in the coming year to lead to yet more improvements. Measurements thus far have been confined to the 70-140GHz range but we have been assembling new equipment which will allow us to extend this down to 10GHz and up to around 300GHz. We have also begun making 90GHz ESR measurements on the ferrite materials to compliment our more conventional free-space quasi-optical measurements of complex index tensor values.
