We propose to measure the magnetic x-ray dichroism (MXD) of magnetic multilayers, heterogeneous alloy films and thin films using the circular polarisation from beamlines 1.1 and 3.4, which cover the main absorption edges of all rare earth and transition metal elements. The aim is to obtain an insight into the factors which determine the electronic and magnetic structure of these materials. The MXD signal is a measure of the orbital magnetisation, and its study will enable us to obtain new insights into many problems of current scientific and technological interest, such as the magnetic proximity effects in non-magnetic spacer layers, giant magnetoresistance, perpendicular anisotropy, spin clusters in heterogeneous alloy films, exchange biasing, film coupling and the role of the spacer layer, changeover in the magnetic anisotropy in certain growth directions, and the presence of unexpectedly large magnetic moments. We propose to provide a service to a wide range of studies in the community and to upgrade the present experimental set up with a split coil superconducting magnet to determine the local hysteresis.
