This project will provide a detailed investigation of the effects of magnetostatic interaction present in nanoscopically defined arrays of magnetic particles. The magnetic domain structure and domain reversal mechanisms will be observed directly using the Foucault mode of a Lorentz electron microscope. An experimental and theoretical model will be constructed which exploits advances made in nano-engineering of fine particles and availability of high speed supercomputers to attempt to reconcile magnetostatic interaction theory with direct experimental observations. Current models will be extended to examine the mineral magnetite, whose fundamental magnetic properties are well known. Particle arrays of various grain sizes and spearations will be modelled, and will for the first time consider arrays in which each particle may change its magnetisation direction via non-coherent as well as coherent rotation.
