This proposed programme is fundamental engineering research aimed at the development of laser vibrometry for engineering applications. Laser vibrometer performance is significantly degraded by the effects of laser speckle, resulting in the pseudo-vibration ambiguity. In the measurement of radial, axial and torsional rotor vibrations, laser vibrometry provides unrivalled measurement potential. However, in these situations, speckle noise amplitudes are so large that this powerful technique is rendered largely ineffective. Early diagnosis of cracks in rotor systems is just one application where pseudo-vibration elimination would allow significant progress to be made. By controlling first the noise amplitude and then its spectral content, the programme aims to remove the pseudo-vibration ambiguity, thereby permitting application in new and vital areas of engineering and, in particular, rotordynamics.
