Summary on Grant Application Form
A consortium drawn from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Sheffield Universities wish to pursue a co-ordinated programme of study of the behaviour of grades sediments in overbank flow. Some preliminary work on inbank flow is incorporated to assist with system development. The first year's work will involve intensive experimentation in an 8ft wide tilting flume at HR concerning straight channels with mobile bed and fixed banks and floodplain. In the third year corresponding experiments in a meandering channel will be done in the FCF at much larger scale. The intermediate year will be occupied by interpretation of the results of year 1, which will involve some smaller scale experimentation at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Sheffield. It is important to note that the measurement technique developed in the 8ft flume will be vital to the data work in the FCF.The principal objective is to improve understanding of grades sediment behaviour sufficiently to effect marked improvements to design procedures and to the security of interpretation of field observations.
