Summary on Grant Application Form
An existing hydraulic fatigue testing machine frame will be modified by the addition of a computer-controlled, high flow rate, servohydraulic unit, and by the addition of a furnace and high temperature tooling, to provide a plane strain, hog compression testing machine. This will be used in conjunction with an existing melting and casting facility to test freshly cast ingots while they are still hot, thus simulating hot direct rolling. The kinetics of recovery, recrystallisation and strain-induced precipitation will be studied in the austenite phase field. Temperatures and deformation schedules will be selected that simulate important aspects of hot direct rolling. Existing models of microstructural evolution which have been developed for conventional controlled rolling of reheated austenite will be critically assessed with respect to their applicability to processing by HDR.
