Summary on Grant Application Form
Muonium represents probably the cleanest atomic system for studying QED since it is a purleptomic atom, free from nuclear size and structure effects. We propose to make measurements of the 1S - 2S interval of this fundamental system by two-photon, Doppler-free laser spectroscopy. The absolute frequency will be calibrated against existing reference lines for Te2 and a measurement of the hydrogen-muonium isotope shift will be made. Our goal is to achieve an accuracy of a few MHz commensurate with the theoretical uncertainty in the Lamb Shift calculation. To do the careful and detailed studies of the excitation process, as well as the characteristics of the laser amplifier will need to be made. Studies of atomic hydrogen and deuterium will be crucial in understanding and minimising systematic error.
