Summary on Grant Application Form
The project involves collaboration between an industrial research laboratory and an HEI to carry out experimental work on the dynamic behaviour of a rotating tyre interacting with uneven ground under controlled and variable constrain conditions at the wheel hub, representative of service use. The experimental results will allow the verification of a physically based tyre model which will be used for theoretical vehicle dynamic behaviour studies to obtain new design information and understanding of suspension systems and of the role which longitudinal oscillations play in contributing to discomfort in vehicles. Vehicle experiments will be used to confirm the findings of the programme in general terms. New information on tyre rolling resistance dependence on surface characteristics will be generated.
