Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a new programme of theoretical research into coherent optical transients in laser cooled samples. We will study spatial ordering in optical molasses by calculating the scattered signal when a short laser pulse is incident on a crystal-like arrangement of cold two-level atoms. We expect to predict Bragg reflections and multi-wave mixing and will explore the scattered signal for a wide range of parameters.A further aim of this project is to investigate the role of Zeeman coherences in the cooling levels of multi-state atoms. The Zeeman coherences are specific to the sub-Doppler cooling mechanisms and quantum beats in the coherent optical response may provide a valuable diagnostic tool.
