Initial design simulations in Oxford have already illustrated the advantage of HTS materials in reducing the volume of a CDMA signal processing system. Some novel components have already shown promising performance. The propsoal involves the design, fabrication and testing of a complete system of filters, resonators, delay lines and correlators, in a format not possible with conventional conductors. The programme will consist of initial system design and design of discrete components, concurrently with deposition of Tl-based superconducting films on a variety of substrates in order to establish the most appropriate combination of superconductor/buffer layer/substate for the specific component. Once the optimum materials combination has been identified, discrete components will be fabricated and performance tested. Having demonstrated that individual components can be successfully produced in a reliable and reproducible fashion, sufficient components will be made and assembled into a complete signal processing system. Performance testing of this system will establish the viability of the initial proposal. Success should lead to a patent application and possible commercial exploitation.
