Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research programme concerns the development of nonlinear optic response polymers. The principal aim is to develop high temperature stable materials that exhibit large second order effects. The approach is to directly attach the chromophore (with second order properties) to a conjugated polymer backbone that acts to lock the sample in its poling induced non-centrosymmetric structure. The polymers prepared will also be of interest for third order nonlinear optic effects and photorefractive responses. The crux of the proposal is to synthesise a range precursor polymers which can be thermally converted to partially or fully conjugated polymers. Each precursor polymer will be required to have a glass transition temperature near to the temperature required for the thermal conversion to a conjugated polymer. The glass transition temperature of the polymers will be varied by changing the substituents on both the chromophore and the polymer backbone. After determination of the physical properties of the polymers, preliminary poling experiments will be carried out. Preliminary investigations on the electronic properties of the polymers will also be carried out.
