In the past few years, the Radial Basis Function (RBF) network has become an alternative two-layer neural network architecture, complementary to the MLP, with the significant advantage that it supports on-line learning naturally (i.e. every piece of data can be used as it becomes available). MLPs are generally trained in batch mode (repeated presentation of all the patterns in the training database) and incremental or on-line learning is difficult. Building on our work on the automated analysis of sleep patterns (which is now being commercialised by Oxford Instruments), we have carried out, over the last eighteen months, and extensive theoretical investigation of RBF architectures.Our aim in this application is to combine our theoretical work on RBF architectures with out recent on-chip learning work and develop RBF neural chips, with the aim of eventually using them for on-line learning. The development of self-adapting neural chips capable of on-line learning, however, can be expected to open up a whole new field of applications which require the low-power, portability and massive parallelism of analogue VLSI.The RBF chip will be demonstrated as components in real-time systems, including a mobile robot.
