The applicants and Professor Kessler of the University of Arizona have made considerable progress in the study of bioconvection, a patte forming bulk motion that develops in suspensions of swimming micro-organisms. The first continuum models were based on an ad hoc prescription of the swimming of the micro-organisms. Subsequent theory has developed to include a rational stochastic description of the swimming with the parameters determined from observations. These models have been used successfully = linear hydrodynamic stability theories. Work in progress with SERC funded research students includes (i) extending the theory to include responses of the micro-organisms to light, (ii) weekly nonlinear bioconvection coupled with experiments on pattern evolution, (iii) analysis of the detailed hydrodynamics of a swimming biflagellate cell, and (iv) the linear theory of pattern formation in suspensions of oxygen - consuming bacteria. The principle objectives of this proposal are (i) to study nonlinear aspects of bioconvection by developing a numerical code and (ii) to calculate the effects of finite sampling lengths and time steps on the statistical analysis of trajectories using numerical simulations of three-dimensional random walks.
