Internal air systems in gas turbines are of critical importance to safe and effective engine operation. Air is bled from an intermediate compressor stage for use as turbine disc coolant; in transit to the turbine the flow interacts with complex flow processes in rotating cavities within the compressor drum. There has been much past work on the mechanisms of flows in engine rotating cavities albeit using idealised cavity geometries. This past work has provided effective understanding for industry to develop predictive design methods for turbine cooling. As yet, understanding is not sufficient for industry to attempt to devise a predictive design tool for compressor zone internal air systems. The research involves two complimentary studies. An experimental investigation using a compressor drum representative of engine geometries will examine flow mechanisms and generate data on heat transfer. In parallel, methods of modelling cavity flows and flow interactions will be sought; the predictions will be compared with experimental data. The approach will use existing CFD concepts - the aim being to find a relative simple, potentially economical, modelling concept - development and exploitation will be by industry.
