Damage Mechanics models of the various regions of a complex multi-phase engineering detail will be created through simulating the mechanical performance of specimens taken from the different regions. The detail will be a transition weld between 316 stainless steel and A508 pressure vessel steel. A large number of notched bar and crack growth specimens will be made and tested to provide data for the simulation which will be accelerated through the development and coding for current ideas on mesh independent metallurgical cell models. The resulting simulation capability will be assessed in mixed mode crack growth tests of varying mode ratio.An analysis using the resulting damage parameters for the different regions will be made of a cracked pipe-to-nozzle transition weld, and the results will be compared with predictions obtained from the use of conventional fracture mechanics assessment methods.
