Summary on Grant Application Form
Detailed understanding of behaviour of geotechnical structures is enhanced by observing the ground response due to load perturbations. A method of achieving this si by testing scale models in a geotechnical centrifuge and observing vertical sections of plane strain models through the perspex side wall of a model container. The research will develop a system capable of capturing and storing images of model tests from a CCTV camera mounted on the centrifuge at City. Software will be optimised so that for each frame images of targets will be automatically found, identified and their co-ordinates measured in near to real time. The system will be properly calibrated enabling measurements of the highest possible accuracy to be achieved. Images will be compared with a chosen reference frame and displacements and strains computed from discrepancies in the two images. Information on serviceability as well as collapse mechanisms will be obtained, so enhancing the value of the centrifuge model tests. Also, the rapid availability of data will assist in deciding the course of a a particular experiment. The system will be extended to work with stereo-images from 2 CCTV cameras to determine automatically changes in surface topography above, for example, tunnel excavations.
