Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is concerned with the study of the fundamental science which underlies the production of crystalline polymer fibres with enhanced mechanical properties by processing through molten metal baths. This will involve the construction of a computer controlled processing apparatus in which a high degree of control and reproductibility can be achieved over processing conditions. The effect of the unusual hydrodynamics and thermal transfer processes that occur in molten metal baths on the crystallisation kinetics of three polymer types will be investigated in detail. The structural organisation of the fibres will be characterised by a range of diffraction, spectroscopic and thermal methods. The tensile properties of the fibres will be investigated and correlated with the processing conditions, fibre morphology and molecular/crystallite orientation. These studies will enable us to relate crystallisation kinetics and processing to mechanical performance. Further insights into the fundamental physics of molten metal bath processing will be achieved through the development of 3-D process models. We envisage that these investigations will underpin the future exploitation of molten metal bath technology.
