Summary on Grant Application Form
The work will involve determination of k-factors of components of HVAC systems. During the first stage of our programme laboratory testing of airflow in an HVAC system will be carried out using various duct fittings. Measurement of airflow will be carried out using tracer-gas techniques and traditional instrumentation such as pilot tubes and hot-wire anemometers. The measurements will be used to determine the fundamental parameters affecting k-factors of duct fittings. The k-factors estimated using various measurement techniques will be compared with data given in the CIBSE, ASHRAE and BSRIA guides. In the second stage of our work, the CFD method (by means of FLUENT and/or FLOW 3D) will be applied to predict k-factors of duct fittings. Results will be compared with those obtained experimentally using the method described above.
