Summary on Grant Application Form
By careful control of quenching conditions in melt-spinning, aluminium-based alloys (typical compositions Al88Ni10Y2 and Al88Ni9Fe3, at %) will be produced consisting of ultra-fine (3 to 30nm diameter) crystals of -Al embedded in an amorphous matrix. Such materials, first discovered in Japan, are known to have very attractive mechanical properties, notably high room temperature and high- temperature strengths and high-strain-rate superplasticity. The project focuses on: understanding and optimising the production process; analysis of microstructure; comparison of direct quenching and divitrification as production methods for such nanophase materials; assessment of the stability of the nanophase structure; measurement of mechanical properties (tensile strength, brittleness/ductility and creep/superplasticity), correlating the properties with microstructure and production conditions; and understanding the deformation processes and their effects on microstructure and properties.
