Summary on Grant Application Form
The question of extending the inverse scattering transform method for solving initial boundary value as opposed to traditional pure initial-value problems has been open for a long time (in spite of intense scrutiny by many prominent researchers). The principal investigator in collaboration with A. Its having recently solved this problem for the initial-boundary value problem of the non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) equation formulated on the half-infinite line. I propose to apply this newly developed method to the Korteweg-de Vries equation as well as to the Davey Stewartson equation which is a two dimensional generalisation of the NLS equation. In addition I propose to continue my investigations on other aspects of integrability. This includes algebraic aspects (with I M Gelfand) as well as the integration of functional equations (with B Dubrovin, I M Gelfand and P Santini.)
