(i) To specify a design environment for the modular implementation of image analysis systems in a flexible and scalable way.(ii) To implement a subset of processing modules to determine the relation between module function and implementation technology.(iii) To evaluate the processing infrastructure in a practical processing task.Progress:Not withstanding the start date indicated, this grant has run in practice for only two months. This is because the researcher appointed, as a result of unforeseen personal circumstances, regrettably had to resign his post after that time. Although a replacement appointment has now been agreed, the new appointee has not yet taken up the post.The preliminary work carried out in the initial period focused on specifying and implementing a basic processing infrastructure on which to build our practical investigations. We have identified a set of processing modules, including appropriate pre-processing, which we shall seek to implement and we have established the range of criteria on which system evaluation should be carried out.In the short term we now aim to proceed as quickly as possible to establishing the practical tools with which to explore a variety of implementational paradigms and to implement and evaluate the algorithms identified within our initial specification phase. We intend to do this initially in isolation to determine broad principles relating to the match between processing structure and implementation base. Beyond this, however, we need to give very careful consideration specifically to interconnection protocols and modularity of design within the integrated framework.
