Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a joint application between two Universities. Leeds Metropolitan University has expertise on the use of the finite element method, while the Impact Research Centre in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool has expertise in the experimental and theoretical dynamic behaviour of structures. This proposal aims to bring together these two strengths to study the response of structures subjected to dynamic loads which produce large inelastic strains and material failure. This topic is of interest for hazard assessments and safety calculations in a wide range of industries. No satisfactory engineering methods are available for predicting the failure of this class of dynamic structural problems. It is proposed to conduct a series of dynamic tests on ductile metal beams subject to increasing impact loads until a material failure is observed. The dynamic properties of the materials from which the beams are made will be obtained. This information will be used in the finite-element computer code in order to obtain the values of the governing variables at the moment of failure in the experimental tests in order to examine the accuracy of various failure criteria and to develop a new one, if necessary.
