Summary on Grant Application Form
Professor Buchstaber's interests are in various aspects of multivaluedness. His original work was in the theory of multivalued formal groups and their applications in algebraic topology. More recently, his work has been on multivalued (Lie) groups and their applications to functional equations and integrable systems. The development of the theory, the study of examples and the understanding of the uses of multivalued groups is still in its infancy. Buchstaber has shown that there are exactly two essentially distinct two-valued group structures on C; their study leads to very interesting functional equations which are closely related to surprising generalisations of classical addition formulae for special functions.
