Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project is concerned with synthetic studies in a number of fields in main group chemistry. Firstly, we propose to make and characterise a range of bismuth alkoxides, amides and thiolates and to subsequently explore their chemistry with early transition metal complexes with a view to gaining an insight into a number of important catalytic systems. Secondly, we are interested in synthesising bismuth containing macrocyclic ligands for use in the field of anion complexation and recognition. Thirdly, a synthetic project designed to make new binary phases of the group 15 elements is proposed, such compounds having potentially important applications as semiconductors. Finally, we intend to look at a number of iodine(III) systems with a view to characterising some important compounds and developing new reagents for organic synthesis.
