Electrical power transmission and distribution systems require a large number of transformer assemblies. Should these transformers malfunction the expense can be enormous. It is therefore vital that they are reliable.Magnetic nonlinearities and hysterisis are well documented phenomena and previous modelling of a transformer within a system has taken a fairly simple form. To analyse the performance of a system in a ferroresonant state requires the physical nonlinearity of the magnetic characteristic tot be accurately represented by a multi-valued function. It is now clear that recent developments in chaos theory can be used to analyse the behaviour of the system.Thus, the aim of this proposal is to model the behaviour of a 3-phase multi-limbed (3 or 5) ferromagnetic transformer under various operating conditions and to determine and characterise the chaotic behaviour of the resulting nonlinear system. A numerical (and, where possible, an analytic) study will be conducted to determine the full complex behaviour of the system and thereby to provide engineering guidelines to the designer of 3-phase ferromagnetic transformer systems. This will result in more reliable distribution of power to the Nation.
