Physical modelling will be carried out to investigate the effect of smear in laminated soil arising from the installation of a vertical drain and the penetration of a piezocone. Small scale modelling of drain installation (in a 250mm diameter consolidation cell) will permit parametric studies of the influence of lamination geometry, drain (or drain mandrel) geometry and rate of installation. The results of these tests will be checked by repeating some tests at larger scale (in a 400mm diameter consolidation cell). At both scales the laminated specimen will be constructed from layers of preconsolidated kaolin alternating with thin layers of silty sand. The effect of smear will be determined using a combination of consolidation and radial flow permeability tests. At the larger scale a series of tests will also be conducted to examine the influence of lamination geometry and position of the pore pressure sensor on the performance of the piezocone. Numerical modelling will be undertaken of some of the test stages, primarily to explore the feasibility of modelling the smear zone.
