The proposal concerns the development of novel anodizing processes, with commercial potential, for the production of self-lubricating anodic films on aluminium and its alloys, which incorporate solid lubricants. The experimental programme examines in detail the film the solid lubricants and tribological performance to provide a fundamental understanding of the system. To validate the processes, the programme incorporates component trials and investigates surface stress states and their relation to fatigue behaviour. Integrated studies are planned of film properties (structure, thickness, pore size, chemistry etc), lubricant formation (deposition conditions, crystal size, orientation, distribution etc), tribological performance (wear rates, coefficients of friction etc), film stress states and their consequence to fatigue life (stress measurements, fatigue tests, crack initiations studies, component trials). Each stage is underpinned by fundamental investigations of key processes in order to develop mechanistic models of lubricant formation, tribological performance and stress/fatigue behaviour. To ensure practical relevance, the programme will be guided by advice from a leading UK surface engineering company who have offered to provide expert knowledge and assistance.
