Summary on Grant Application Form
The study of turbulence in partial differential equations is demanding both analytically and numerically. Following recent analytical advances in the study of turbulence in the Complex Ginzburg Landau Equation (CGLE), it is proposed to study this equation numerically, together with the related inviscid Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. Numerical methods will be developed for dealing with hard and soft turbulence in the CGLE in one dimension. Methods will be chosen which, when applied to the NLS equation, preserve the conservation properties of the equation and give an accurate representation of the finite time singularity. These methods will then be applied to the CGLE to investigate behaviour of the L2 and L_ norms of the solution in the region of the predicted transition from soft to hard turbulence.
