Summary on Grant Application Form
In 1978 we started the construction of a nuclear cooling refrigerator which has now operated at record low temperatures for over a decade. It still works well, but cannot last for ever. The present proposal is for funds to finish the construction of a new refrigerator, the groundwork for which is already in place with support from the University and from the Wolfson Foundation. We expect the refrigerator to remain competitive well into the next century. The new design and construction uses the experience (academic and technical) of running the old machine, and we anticipate a considerably enhanced performance, 50 microkelvin for helium and below 5 microkelvin for a metallic solid. This will enable us to continue and extend our experiments on superfluid helium-3 in the regime below 0.1 times the transition temperature (0.9 mK at zero pressure), a regime which opens up a number of exciting fundamental problems. The question of superfluidity in solutions of helium-3 in helium-4 remains of perennial fascination. We are also eager to have machine time to extend our range of experiments to various solid state properties (nuclear magnetism, low dimensional metallic structures, heavy fermions etc).
