Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is very specifically to support a postdoctoral researcher (Robert Crook) to undertake a series of experiments on quantifying in detail the X(3) properties of some polymeric waveguide materials. Measurements already undertaken have yielded the most accurate measurement of n2 and but as yet it is unclear using 30ps pulses whether the nonlinearities are thermal or electronic in origin. This will first be established and then further accurate measurements using grating coupling to polymer waveguides will be undertaken to fully quantify the nonlinearities both using transverse magnetic and transverse electric waveguide resonances. The use of the two polarisations will allow the determination of the anisotropy of X(3) and thereby give a measure of order parameter in the film. With this knowledge, improved aligning techniques will be used to prepare samples with even better nonlinear properties. All the equipment for this project is available, the request is to support the worker who has pioneered these studies and who has the requisite skills to take them to completion.
