Whilst chemical purity is well established by the pharmaceutical industry for raw materials use in dosage forms, understanding of the physical state of powdered components is rarely achieved although such characterisation is fundamental to the optimal design of formulations and processing. This results in formulation and processes that are acceptable, rather than optimal, designed on experience and empiricism, and this can lead to unpredictable difficulties at a late date. This project, linking three experienced academic groups with leading pharmaceutical companies, has the overall aim to research and establish links between the physical properties bioactive compounds and excipients and secondary processing characteristics. particular emphasis will be focused on carefully controlled crystallisation and micronisation operations with fundamental characterisation of the physical form at the various processing stage. The thrust of the research in Pharmaceutical Technology, Bradford University in this tripartite programme will be to identify specific characteristics required in pharmaceutical powders for optimal performance in processing, secondary manufacture and important pharmaceutical properties so that predictive links between material properties and processing performance, and particle formation operations can be established.
