Summary on Grant Application Form
We have pioneered research on homopolymer/lightly branched copolymer blends, where the physical properties of the two components are very similar. We have developed novel, indirect, methods to study liquid liquid phase separation (LLPS) and have shown that in linear/lightly branched polyethylene blends LLPS is found, in the unusual form of a closed loop at low linear polymer content. We are now in a position to expand and exploit this research. Under SERC funding we will pursue three lines of study, all following from current work -- We will further the understanding of the novel LLPS we have identified, both through modelling and through experimentation on well defined systems.- We will develop experimental methods in order to observe LLPS directly in the melt.- We will extend the range of blends studied to include materials with higher branch densities, with branches which are chemically different from the backbone, at a wide range of chemically different polymers.
