Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To develop a computer model for the fire performance of (laminated) composites in one and two dimensions. 2. To construct a facility allowing the fire testing of long pipe assemblies including stagnant of flowing water. 3. To obtain further data regarding the fire performance of composite and other construction materials at high temperatures. This project follows on from related work carried out by the same team in the previous phase of the managed programme. Existing one dimensional computer programs for the prediction of the performance of composite panels and pipes subject to fire will be further developed and extended to two dimensions using both finite difference and finite element techniques. This will include the effect of ablation of partly combustible materials, the effect of moisture migration and evaporation from hygroscopic materials, and the performance of a wide range of construction materials at high temperature. The investigation of the fire performance of pipes will include the effect of both stagnant and flowing water which may be introduced at some time after the start of the fire. This necessitates the construction of a new outdoor testing facility with enhanced safety features. The furnace will be of sufficient dimensions to allow the testing of pipe systems including bends, fittings and supports. The thermal modelling work will be carried out in close collaboration with the University of Newcastle though all of the fire testing for both parts of the modelling programme will be carried out at Salford.
